If you purchase Lipitor from Walmart, it will cost you apx. $100.00 per month x 12 months = $1200.00 per year.
Now let's take a look at the cost of that same medication, Lipitor, by simply splitting the pill dosage in half.
Purchase the same pill in 20 mg for Walmart at a cost of $143.00 for 30 tabs x 6 months=$858.00
Now you will only have to purchase the 20 mg. tabs every other month because you will be splitting the dosage in half. Your savings per year would be 342.00 per year.
Same medication, same dosage but greater savings.
Now lets' say you do a little price shopping on Medical Price Point's comparison site.
Right now the cheapest Lipitor we could find is at Target. The cost from their Pharmacy is $98.00 for 30 tabs of 20 mg Lipitor. Multiple that times the 6 months = $564.00 Compared to the 10mg price of $1200.00 per year, you would save a grand total of $636.00
Not bad for just educating yourself on a little known Pharmaceutical trick. You need to remember however, that time released capsules are not splittable and this method will only work with "pills".
Here are a couple more examples;
Sertaline (generic Zoloft) 50 mg pills at Costco x 12 months= $35 x 12= $420/year
Sertraline (generic Zoloft) 100 mg pill at Kmart x 6 months= $5 x 6= $30/year
$420- $30= $390 per year savings
Amlodipine (generic Norvasc) 5 mg pills at Walmart x 12 months= $40 x 12= $480/year
Amlodipine (generic Norvasc) 10 mg pills at Kmart x 6 months= $5 x 6= $30/year
$480 - $30= $450/per year savings
